About

What is Trigger.dev?

Trigger.dev is an open-source developer platform for creating and managing durable background jobs, event-driven workflows, and scheduled tasks — all written as regular TypeScript code inside your codebase. Unlike traditional queue systems or no-code automation tools, Trigger.dev runs long-running jobs with automatic retrying, real-time observability, replay, and cancellation — without any infrastructure setup. With native integrations for OpenAI, Slack, GitHub, Stripe, and more, it is the developer-native alternative to Zapier for background workflows.

Pros & Cons

Pros

  • Code-first background jobs in TypeScript — no new DSL or UI required
  • Durable execution — jobs survive restarts and handle long-running tasks
  • Real-time observability: live logs, run history, and replay
  • Native integrations with OpenAI, GitHub, Stripe, Slack, and more
  • Automatic retrying with exponential backoff
  • Self-hostable for teams with data residency requirements
  • No infrastructure to manage — runs in your existing Node.js environment

Cons

  • TypeScript/JavaScript only — no support for other languages yet
  • Self-hosting requires more setup than n8n or Zapier
  • Smaller community than established automation platforms
  • Some integrations still in early access
  • Production scaling guidance still maturing

Use Cases

Long-running AI workflows (document processing, LLM chains) Scheduled background jobs (nightly syncs, report generation) Event-driven automation triggered by webhooks from Stripe, GitHub, etc. Replacing Zapier for developers who want automation in their codebase Durable job queues for media processing and data pipelines
